Question: How do I create a character for a film I’m auditioning for?
Answer: Creating a character is a complex process which requires a detailed discussion, but you can start out by asking, “How am I like the character in the script?” and “ How am
I different?”
If you are very similar to the character in the script you can be yourself, but if you are very different from the character in the script, identify the differences and work on stretching yourself. Consider age, social class, personality attributes, physical characteristics, voice, education, hobbies, family life, time period, regionalisms, etc. In the end you want the character to be real and natural and not contrived. You can also try being the character at home in your daily life. It’s also always a good idea to write a brief 1 or 2 page biography of the character you are auditioning for.
